Second Wednesday in Lent – 15 March 2017

March 15, 2017

“I don’t know what I’m doing, because I don’t do what I want to do. Instead, I do the thing that I hate.” (Romans 7:15 CEB)

‭‭Tonight’s theme was challenge… In the Gospel reading, Peter challenged Jesus when our Lord talked about going to Jerusalem to suffer and die… Peter spoke loudly about this in typical Peter fashion (ready, shoot, aim!)

“Then Peter took hold of Jesus and, scolding him, began to correct him: “God forbid, Lord! This won’t happen to you.”” (Matthew‬ ‭16:22‬ ‭CEB)

Jesus countered with the infamous “Get behind me, Satan” comeback. No, Peter wasn’t channeling Satan. Peter was being used. Jesus recognized that and countered the challenge.

As I reflected on this combination of passages, I thought about the times when what the Lord asks me to do is the opposite of what I want to do. The times when I didn’t want to take the difficult path that might lead to me not being in control. Jesus faced that temptation in the Wilderness. And when I keep my eyes on Him, he shows me the way through the Wilderness (even when it is one of my own making).

As we journey with Jesus through the Wilderness, we are challenged to confront our own demons. How will we respond? Lord, in your mercy, give us the strength and the determination to follow where you lead.
