War Always Takes You Backwards — Pope Francis

February 21, 2026

What is the use of solemnly committing ourselves all together, on an international level, in campaigns against poverty, against hunger, against the degradation of the planet, if we then fall back into the old vice of war, into the old strategy of the power of armaments, which takes everything and everyone backward? A war always takes you backward, always. We walk backward. Against War: Building a Culture of Peace, p.13

“War is obsolete, you know.” … Of course the mind can rationalize fighting back, but the heart, the heart would never understand. Then you would be divided in yourself, the heart and the mind, and the war would be inside you.” (Dalai Lama’s response to why he did not fight back against the Chinese occupation of Tibet)

Thank you for sharing his wisdom with me. The war is indeed both external and internal…

As I look back on my time in the military chaplaincy, I now see the dilemma that I faced. Trying to be a moral and ethical advisor to leadership while watching christian nationalist chaplains act counter to all that we were called to be by the Constitution and by regulations. That was a part of my decision to turn down promotion and retire.
