The news of displaced persons, of people fleeing, killed, wounded, of so many soldiers fallen on both sides, is news of death. Let us ask the Lord of life to deliver us from this death of war. With war everything is lost, everything. There is no victory in a war; everything is defeated. May the Lord send his Spirit to make us understand that war is a defeat of humanity, to make us understand that instead we need to defeat war. May the Spirit of the Lord free us all from this self-destructive need that is manifested in waging war. Let us also pray that leaders may understand that buying and making weapons is not the solution to the problem. The solution is to work together for peace and, as the Bible says, to turn weapons into instruments for peace. — Against War: Building A Culture of Peace (p. 12)

I often wonder with the rise of autonomous technology, how distructive war will become, when for many creating wars will be removed from the immediate cause/effects as in past wars.
That was a moral and ethical concern that I had when I was in uniform…

That is damned scary… horrifying!
If we, as Merton readers, think in terms of hermeneutics, how and why do we need to interpret Merton’s thinking in a world of emerging autonomous technology? History shows us that in the last two revolutions (agricultural and industrial), it took decades to implement the guardrails and safeguards of the technology. Today, the rapid pace of technological change is leaving us much more vulnerable than in the past. I also spent 35+ years in emerging technology in “Silicon Valley,” and when I discuss this with educated people, I get the “deer-in-headlights” look. We need to develop a Merton hermeneutic on emerging technology. The “Sitz im Leben” is the key here.
That is so very true. Frankly we don’t have decades to implement those guardrails with tech developing so quickly. The “Sitz im Leben” is ever moving and moving at warp speed.
