Sojourners Verse and Voice – 1 January 2021

January 1, 2021

Verse of the day
Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. — Deuteronomy 4:9 (NIV)

Voice of the day
History, despite its wrenching pain / Cannot be unlived, but if faced / With courage, need not be lived again. – Maya Angelou, “On the Pulse of Morning”

Prayer of the day
Almighty God, help us to hold onto the lessons of this past year, using the points of pain as a map that reveals where to focus our energy to address disparities and injustice. In this way, may we move forward from 2020 not just by turning a calendar page, but more importantly by building a nation and a world where the pitfalls that contributed to the tragedies of 2020 are remedied.
