Silence and Love – A Reflection

June 11, 2020
A moose in Moose Meadow!

During this Pandemic we have been invited, okay, compelled to become monks in this new reality. I have talked to parishioners, friends, and colleagues about this reality. It is a challenge for so many. Even for an introvert like me it can be a challenge. Ministry has changed in so many ways during this pandemic.

Despite the changes one thing remains the same. The Spirit is flowing in new and amazing ways as ministry adjusts to this new reality without losing the passion of Pentecost. In the midst of this Merton continues to speak to my heart. His words in Love and Living speak to my heart as we walk this journey with our Lord.

If there is no silence beyond band within the many words of doctrine, there is no religion, only a religious ideology. For religion goes beyond words and actions, and attains to the ultimate truth only in silence and Love. Where this silence is lacking, where there are only the “many words” and not the One Word, then there is much bustle and activity, but no peace, no deep thought, no understanding, no inner quiet. Where there is no peace, there is no light and Love. (p. 19-20)

Dear reader, in seeking that peace, light, and love; may we become instruments of God’s peace, love, and justice.
