Who Do We Serve?

August 26, 2018

Even though I didn’t blog this weekend, the reading for today from Joshua has been on my mind and in my heart all week. In Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-18 we hear Joshua’s challenge to the people… Choose this day whom you will serve. And as my friend and fellow blogger Jake Owensby experienced (What We Love Matters), Bob Dylan’s song “You’ve Got to Serve Somebody” kept playing in my mind.

Joshua was challenging the people as they made the transition from wandering in the wilderness to being a people in a specific place. Who are you going to serve? The multitude of god’s your ancestors served? The local deities? The god’s of Egypt where you had been captive for so long? You’ve got to serve somebody… as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

I believe the question bears repeating in each generation and we need to ponder it today. There are so many god’s clamoring for our attention today… money, power, prestige, nationalism, privilege… the list goes on and on. You’ve got to serve somebody…

The one who touched the lepers… welcomed the outcasts… loved the unloveable… you’ve got to serve somebody… the call is clear. Choose this day (and every day for that matter) whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Dear reader, you have to serve somebody… whom will you choose?
