Stephen Hawking was the greatest physicist of his generation. His name will be whispered in the pantheon of science, along with the hallowed icons of Einstein, Newton, Galileo, and Copernicus. Yet, his brilliance was the object of much scorn in the church, and while the response has not been universal, many faith leaders have reacted to Hawking’s death with snarkiness and dark mockery.
Responses like, “I bet Hawking believes in God now,” and “Some genius. He couldn’t even see the truth in front of him,” and “Stephen Hawking is now in the fiery flames of hell where he belongs,” filled my inbox and social media timeline for days. It’s a deplorable schadenfreude that makes me feel ashamed.

I appreciate this article but this came to my mind as I read it. It is a question from Jesus for all of us. I know you know it. While Dr. Hawkings was very accomplished, the answer to this is non the less very important. Just because some mocked his death, it doesn’t negate the reality of the issue Jesus raises for all of us.
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.”
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner!
That is indeed a good point. I have had people ask me about that and I believe that the Lord is the way, the truth, and the life, and the only way to the Father. How Jesus does that is, as we used to say in the military, “above my pay grade”. My job is to love and to share the Good News as you do also my brother.
