In the Midst of the Storm

August 12, 2017

Two weeks ago I wrote this explanation for the above picture that is on tomorrow’s worship bulletin: “When Elijah sought the Lord’s presence he found out that God was not in the rushing wind, the earthquake, or great fire. God was found in the sheer silence gently whispering. The past few months have been filled with lots of activity and it seems that this marmot who was making an appearance in June after the long winter was encouraging me to simply be still and listen. I think I may need to take the marmot’s advice!”

This week has been one of ups and downs… we are slowly recovering from the water damage caused by the ice maker in our refrigerator. We had a delightful rehearsal and wonderful wedding celebration that it was my honor to officiate at.

Yet, in the midst of my preparations for tomorrow and the wedding, an all too common ugly stain on this nation’s psyche reared its ugly head. I am still reeling and processing the horror that the dregs of society unleashed on Charlottesville, Virginia. I knew clergy members who were there and who were being a non-violent symbol of prayer and reflection. Sadly too I know of people who have no problem with the KKK, Nazi Wannabes, and other hate-filled beings and their actions.
I don’t know what tomorrow will bring… Lord, in your mercy, may your Spirit give me words to share of challenge… of comfort… of hope…in the midst of the raging storm, speak Lord, for your servant is listening…
