Reflection & Evening Prayer – 15 June 2016

June 15, 2016

It was another incredibly full day of ministry. It was the final morning of Vacation Bible School, saying farewell to the four amazing Highlands Presbyterian Camp & Conference Center Summer Camp counselors who led VBS and also stayed with Denise and me from Sunday through Wednesday. We also said farewell to her niece Mackie and Mackie’s friend Kaitlyn who also stayed with us from Sunday evening through this morning. In addition, a pastoral call in the afternoon with someone facing serious surgery, a concert at PCCR by a visiting church youth choir and a wonderful fellowship meal provided for the choir by our A+++ Hospitaity Committee! Exhausted, we returned home to put some stuff away before heading to the YMCA of the Rockies for a Prayer Vigil that the Y Chaplain offered. Exhausted we may have been, but the trip was so worth it!

You see, the Vigil was to pray for those impacted by the murderous rampage at The Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. It was close to home for Denise and me as we thought about our own extended family who have been hit hard by this tragedy. We had invitations to a vigil in Mobile, but obviously couldn’t attend. Yet in Estes Park, we prayed in solidarity with them. I also thought of the many people we have been advocates for in Florida, Alabama, Colorado, and beyond.

I thought of the countless Airmen that I had been an ally for during the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” era (basically my entire Active duty career as a Chaplain). I thought of my seminary classmates and friends who were on the front lines in the 80’s of the LGBTQ movement. I thought of the former military member in the hospital in 1991 who was dying from AIDS related pneumonia. I stood vigil with his sister and niece and we held him and prayer as he died… So many faces flooded my memory as we prayed…

We also prayed for Muslims who are being targeted because some sick and misguided individuals have hijacked their faith. I thought of the Imams and Muslim military members I have served with through the years. We prayed for the Muslim members of the Y staff. We prayed for the LGBTQ members of the Y staff, one of whom lost a very dear friend in Orlando.

We sang the song, “Lord, Listen To Your Children Praying” four times in prayer… “Lord, listen to your children praying. Lord, send your Spirit in this place. Lord, listen to your children praying. Send us love, send us power, send us grace.”

Exhausted, I ponder, reflect, pray, and write… Exhausted, tears stream down my face… Lord, listen to your children praying… You teach us how to love, Lord… To love all of your children… To love and not condemn… To love and not hate… To love and not belittle… To simply, without reservation, love…

Tonight, the Vesper Lights flicker and glow

Tonight, my full heart groans with so many

Tonight, Lord, listen to our prayer…

Grant Us Peace

A wee prayer and heartfelt reflection from your Padre as he prays with his sisters and brothers who suffer… For all who simply ask that, as the t-shirt I have reads, Love Wins… #LoveWins… Lord, listen to your people praying…
