If you need a refresher, Ishmael was Abraham’s firstborn son. His mother was Hagar, maid of Sarai; she was sent into the desert. The story in the Quran is similar, only with an emphasis on the branch of the family that led to Islam.
Hagar was clearly a godly woman: Genesis 21:17-21 says

I got to live alongside Muslim women when I was a uni student, and later on when my mother-in-law worked at a Muslim school I got to meet the women who worked there. I am so grateful that when I hear the word “Muslim,” I think of specific individuals – devout, faithful and kind women who blessed me by their presence in their life. Here in Australia Muslims have really been the targets of incredible media hostility and it’s so sad and unwarranted.
