Lord, Teach Me to Pray…

February 18, 2015

Communion - Beckwith

Lord, there are so many words

Too many formulas to choose.

I know that I need you,

Lord, teach me to pray.

There are so many people

Who have so many troubles.

Their pain is overwhelming.

It comes over me like a tidal wave.

How did you manage to feed

Five thousand with such scant supplies?

Five loaves, two fish, so many to fill,

Where did it come from, this food for the soul?

What was that, Lord?

I can barely hear your voice.

Too much noise and distraction,

Could you speak louder, please?

Come unto me, burdened as you are,

I will give you rest…

Be still and know, that you are God…

Open your heart to hear my call…

I’m beginning to hear you, now,

Slowly it is coming in clear.

Spend time in your presence,

And I’ll know how to pray!

I wrote this poem on 25 July 1998 shortly after transferring from Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Lackland AFB, TX to Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, NV. A good reflection for this Lenten season…
