Are we ready to talk about the need for peace and the role of the Gospel in addressing the challenges that are right before our eyes? This book remains relevant today as it challenges our culture and politics. We are living in a time when the threat of war is broadcast from the White House not only globally but also in our own streets. Are we prepared to discuss a Gospel-centered approach to peace and nonviolence? Do we understand Merton’s vision of peace as something deeply connected to the Christian life? Are we willing as a community to seriously see, discern, and act?
I know this is hard and challenging for all of us, God only know how I struggle with the challenges of living a life based on the gospels all too often I just want to close my eyes and say all this please go away.

I understand that struggle all too well. I can’t even imagine how it would be if I was still in the military chaplain corps. What they are doing is contrary to everything I was taught… it was bad enough back then (torture and illegal imprisonment amongst other things… thank you W and Cheney) but now? I’d likely be drummed out for speaking out.
