Do you remember those movies that proclaim the end of the world? People in rags living in dark places under the bridge scrounging for food. I found out where they made those movies.
When people with homes complain, the police raid streets where homeless sleep and force them to find a new place.
Recently, I saw a handful of men, women and children move their camp under the bridge one block over. It is crowded. As I drove past it Sunday morning, every space filled up with sleeping bags, blankets, backpacks and sleeping bodies. For a moment it looks like the end of the world.
Then Jimmy recognizes my car and waves with a big smile. “Yeah, we got a new home. Don’t worry. The police will shift some other group next week and we will move back.”
