The Bible and Metaphors-Uncircumcised Ear
An interesting take on an obscure metaphor that we heard Walter Brueggeman use in a lecture this morning!
Last night and this morning Michael and I had the privilege of hearing Bible scholar Walter Bruegemann speak at Montview Presbyterian Church in Denver. He is very knowledgable, extremely passionate, and intensely captivating. In his introduction someone read a prayer that he published that had a reference to circumcised ears. Someone else commented on what a strange image that was and he said it came from Jeremiah. To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, they cannot listen; behold, the word of the LORD is to them an object of scorn; they take no pleasure in it. Jer. 6: 10 ESV I am certain I have read this before and believe I have contemplated it’s meaning to some degree but today it was highlighted.
