I recently learned that the Hebrew word for plant in Psalm 1 and Jeremiah 17 has a deeper meaning. Yes, it means to plant but it also means to transplant. In the recent metaphors class my husband Michael and I took from Columbia Seminary’s Center for Lifelong Learning our instructor encouraged us to think about the difference between planting something and transplanting something. He also reflected that he believes this is a better translation; the CEB translation actually uses replanted instead of planted. The Israelite’s, after all, were uprooted several times in their history and placed in the middle of a foreign land.
A transplanted tree has been uprooted, gone through trauma and shock. A transplanted tree is vulnerable. A transplanted tree requires special care and support. A transplanted tree brings forth an entirely different image than that of a planted tree.
