Colloquy – In Gethsemane
Today we are experiencing Week Three of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius. Our call is to Companion Jesus in his Passion… To walk with him… To experience it from his perspective… To gain understanding somehow. I chose to reflect on Matthew 26:36-56 (Gethsemane).
It started out with me being with the disciples… Then a shift happened and I began to see it from Jesus’ perspective and he began to talk to me. In the end, he offered consolation to me… These are the words I wrote as the experience unfolded.
Lord, three times your returned
Three times I was sleeping
Frustrated and hurt, you woke me up
Can’t you stay awake one hour for me?
Michael, all I am asking is that you pray for me
All I am asking is that you pray with me
I am not asking you to take on my burden
I promised that my yoke was easy, my burden light
I am asking you to share it with me
Pray with me… Stay with me… Love me…
They are here now
The time has come
Wake up and stay with me
Drop your weapon
Do you want to die by the sword?
All I ask is that you stay with me
I have been with you and the disciples
Through it all I have stayed
Even when you didn’t get it I stayed
Now I ask you… I beg you… Stay…
Michael? Where are you? Why have you abandoned me?
All I asked was that you stay awake and pray with me
Michael? Have you left me too?
Michael, I will stay with you
Michael, I will not abandon you
Michael, I love you
Michael, follow me
